Look out on familiar places

The western meadows are sheltered in woodland. To the east, meanwhile, vistas open towards the Garth Mountain, along the Taff Valley to Castell Coch, St Fagans, Caerphilly Mountain and Craig Llysfaen.

The further east you walk, the more of the city you’ll see. Head across to the tall beech trees in the south-eastern high ground and, on a sunny day, you’ll catch the light dancing on the surface of the Severn Estuary, the two bridges leading your eyes across to the Mendip Hills of Somerset in the distance.

Many families choose a spot overlooking places that mean something to them. “Can I be here? I can see my whole life from here,” said one person, as they sat beneath the sycamore tree, looking out to Pontypridd from amongst the tall grasses of summer.

Discover peace through the changing seasons

Within the grounds, the open-fronted, oak-framed memorial shelter provides space for funeral services and refuge from the weather should you need it. It’s home to inscribed oak memorial plaques that line the wall commemorating people laid to rest in the meadow.

The beauty of the meadow evolves with the passing seasons. At any time of year, a visit to the burial ground will connect you with nature, reveal your senses to the elements, replenish you and revitalise you. You’ll have space to focus, to reflect on life, love, and loss.

Our aim is to provide peaceful resting places in the beautiful countryside. Places for people to escape the hustle and bustle of the modern world.

The meadow offers time and space to do things your way. Whether arriving on horseback, bringing the dogs, erecting a marquee, or keeping things very simple, you have the scope and freedom to do as you wish.

Quick Questions

Do we need to use a funeral director?

There is no legal requirement in the UK to use a funeral director. The professionals are there to support you and help you achieve what you want to do. A good funeral director will provide the help and support you need when you need it.

What’s to stop people from building on the land?

Use of the land is restricted to natural burials by covenants contained in its 99-year lease. Beyond that, the burial ground is an integral part of the Traherne Estate and will continue to provide land for grazing and hay-making when the lease expires.

Can we buy a double plot?

Burial and interment plots are single-depth, and double-plots are side-by-side.

What type of coffins can be used?

Coffins should be made from and lined with natural, biodegradable materials. No plastics, MDF, or chipboard should be used.

Is embalming allowed?

We can’t accept embalmed bodies for burial unless there are exceptional circumstances. Cremated remains contain no residue from embalming chemicals and can therefore be interred in the meadow.

Can I visit the burial ground on bank holidays?

Yes, you can go and visit the burial ground any time regardless of bank holidays – This is the case all year round for visits, it is always open for you to visit a loved one.

My father wanted to be buried in a beautiful wood/meadow and as a lifelong patron to the museum, with a view overlooking St. Fagans, this ground was perfect.

The site is open all year round during daylight hours so please feel free to visit without making an appointment. The pedestrian gate is always open.
